Sir James Gobbo was born in Australia of Italian parents and spent part of his childhood in Italy. He has been a Rhodes Scholar, a barrister, Judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria, 1978-1994, and Governor of Victoria, 1997-2000. In addition, his career has included government positions and activities relating to immigration reform and multicultural affairs, the Australian honours system, hospital administration and philanthropy.
